Jason is a lead instructor of ‘Ukulele Creations, a comprehensive music program developed together with six-time GRAMMY award winner, Daniel Ho. ‘Ukulele Creations classes are designed to teach students how to play and create music on the ‘ukulele. Using the fun and accessibility of the ‘ukulele and the latest innovative educational tools, these classes provide music education in an engaging multimedia format appropriate for students of any level. While learning to play songs, students will utilize a hands-on application of music theory to develop an understanding of music and musical creativity. ‘Ukulele Creations classes are designed to provide the tools to help transition from music playing to music creation.
Jason teaches weekly classes in Los Angeles at U-Space (JACCC, Little Tokyo, Downtown LA) and Ventura, CA at Anacapa Ukulele; workshops in Torrance, CA; and a summer workshop series in San Jose, CA at Ukulele Source.
Ukulele Classes March – April 2014
Available at U-Space LA and Anacapa Ukulele Ventura:
‘Ukulele 101 for complete beginners. We’ll be studying proper technique, bits of usable music theory, strumming, chords and scales, finger-picking, and even a little bit of soloing – all within the application of fun and familiar songs! Available at U-Space LA Sundays, 2:30-3:45pm. Anacapa Ukulele, Thursdays, 7:00-8:15pm.
‘Ukulele 201 for players who have learned some basics and want to take it to the next level. Knowledge of and ability to play through chords C, Em, F, D7, and G7 are a must for this class. In 201, we’ll pick up where 101 leaves off. In addition, we’ll be studying some of what is taught in 101 only in more complex keys and at a slightly faster pace. Available at U-Space LA Sundays, 1:00-2:15pm. Anacapa Ukulele, Wednesdays, 7:00-8:15pm.
‘Ukulele Drills: Consider the drills class your 30min morning Yoga session or the “lab section” for the 101 and 201 classes. There are 2 levels, intermediate at 10:00AM on Saturdays and beginner at 10:30 on Saturdays. In each class we focus on a specific technique (be it scales, or chord switching, etc…) and motivate you through an efficient practice session.
Jam Class: This is a non-progressive class for all levels. In the JAM Class, we study one popular song each week and show you the possibilities of playing and singing with your own skill set, but with a group of musicians of all levels. This class will get you ready for the ever-popular uke jam in your own community, and also build the book of songs for our own Kanikapila jam sessions. Classes are Saturdays from 11:30-12:15pm.
